Smitten

Why, why offer her right
When cruelly smitten on her left?
Perhaps gather some self respect
turn her cheek and move away
if retaliation is not her will.
I fail to fathom her psyche
I fail to understand, and in anguish I rest.

it can be hard. turning the other cheek.. i dont know in wht context u wrote that...but it requires a total humbling of the self. when the ego has burnt down to ashes...

I fail to fathom the poem. 'offer her right when smitten on HER left'? I am unable to visualize the poem.

The spirit of the matter can be followed rather than going by the letter? In the bit I noted the act is not out of humbling of the ego, as there is no ego in her.But simply perplexing charcter.

I meant what I wrote. You can if you visulaise the context

You mean, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth? I'm not sure of the context you have chosen to write this, but from what I understand...

I guess, majority of us of this generation and the next are trained to stand up for ourselves. Albeit, in a tactful manner. Violence only spurns more violence, doesn't end it.

Well difficult to explain the context and the mind set of the person. But it is not in the context of tit for tat .
The basic question is should one smite you must you stand and invite another blow, why not walk away and keep some self respect?
Well well'm quite poor in putting together the lines for people to understand.
